Ravenglass harbour, little changed since Roman times, offers sheltered moorings for visiting yachts. Ravenglass is recognised as the start (or finish!) of the “Hadrianic Frontier” and offers great opportunities to walkers and cyclists alike, as well as anyone with a love of the countryside. The village is also home to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, a renowned narrow gauge steam railway: www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk
Walls Bath House boasts the highest free-standing Roman Walls in the North of England, and Wasdale, just a short drive away, is home of England’s smallest Church and Wastwater, England’s deepest lake.North of Ravenglass lies Gosforth, a village with Viking connections – visit the Church to see an impressively tall Viking cross. In Egremont, the nearest town, you can see interesting ruins of a medieval castle, and a little further north lies Whitehaven, a Georgian town with a bustling harbour and marina which are well worth a visit.
